Maths - Week 4

This week we will be working on a series of problems related to wool pressing.

The topic is a great fit with our our rural character and is a great opportunity to make connections between the skills we are learning in class, and how they can be applied to real-world problem solving.

What are INFORMATION TEXTS?

• Use the link to access the text ad video resources on information texts for Tuesday's lesson.
• We will review the information and come up with a comprehensive list of the main features of an information text
• You will also have a chance to explore the Coggle and Piktochart apps 
• You may want to try using these apps to create the information text that will accompany your Monopoly playing piece

Inquiry - Monopoly Playing Piece Scenario

Last week we began working on our first inquiry project of the term. The students were presented with the challenge and criteria for success and quickly began exploring ideas. 

Some of the things that most impressed me were how:

• students chosen to form teams based on a shared interest in a topic as opposed to traditional friendship groups - this shows open-mindedness!
• some students demonstrated a steadfast commitment to their area of personal interest and chose to work alone - this takes courage! 
• all of the students were keen to get stuck into their projects and even wanted to continue working on their research during break time - this shows dedication and self-motivation! 
• A special shout-out to Emily who went above and beyond in the completion of her research. She actually decided to continue her learning at home :) 

The Challenge...

Monopoly are creating new playing pieces for their game. 

Your challenge is to:

• complete research into the landmark, animal, person, plant, or object of your choice
• record at least 5-7 interesting facts about your chosen landmark, animal, person, plant, or object
• create an information text that will inform the class about your chosen landmark, animal, person, plant, or object
• create a 3D sculpture of your chosen landmark, animal, person, plant, or object
• deliver a 30 second elevator pitch that will persuade Monopoly to choose your playing piece

Criteria for Success:

• Check the accuracy of your research by cross-checking with at least 3 different sources/websites (self assessment and teacher assessment)
• Demonstrate originality in how you present your information text (self assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment)
• You will be assessed on the visual appeal and sturdiness of your completed clay sculpture (self assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment)
• You will be assessed on the persuasiveness of your elevator pitch (peer assessment and teacher assessment)
